EMANCIPATION DAY COMING UP, THAT DOESN'T APPLY 2 JAMAICA

EVEN as the country gets ready to celebrate Emancipation Day next Monday, some pastors in western Jamaica are concerned that the society is still shackled by a depraved mentality that has manifested itself in skin bleaching, widespread corruption in public life and other negative phenomena.
“A society is not truly emancipated if it has to resort to a State of Emergency, because with God as the Master there would be freedom from crime and violence because there would be enough fear in your heart for God,” said Abu Ibrahiim of the Montego Bay Masjiid.
“While the State of Emergency was probably necessary to flush out gunmen, the police abused their power and trampled on the rights of the people,” he said. That is not freedom; it reminds me of the ‘Bucky Master’ (slavery) days,” he stressed.

Dorrett Blake, the pastor of the Sold Out Ministries, also based in Montego Bay, believes that many in the society are enslaved mentally. Many of us are enslaved to "Me”. We focus on ourselves and pay little or no attention to the poor and the oppressed. We have become oblivious to the injustice around us and have become slaves to our own desires and comfort,” she stressed.

I CONCUR...EMANCIPATION IS FREEDOM. JAMAICA IS NOT FREE WE R ENSLAVED BY THE GOVT. WRONG DESIRES, COVETOUSNESS N GREED.

SCHOOL FEES RISING LIKE A HELIUM BALLOON

Executive Director of the Students Loan Bureau, Lenice Barnett, made some startling revelations in parliament yesterday that could force thousands of college students & their empathizes on the streets. She says tuition costs could double next year when the government cuts its subvention by 20% to 60%. This means that tuition fees will soar to nearly half of a million dollars per annum in less than two years.

A high-ranking United States official says there is a series of extradition requests for suspected Jamaican criminals to be processed by the Government.

United States Assistant Secretary of State Arturo Valenzuela, in a question-and-answer session with local journalists at the US Embassy in Kingston yesterday, said the US was looking forward to Jamaica's response to the requests.

"We have an extradition treaty that has been in effect for over 20 years. It worked successfully for that time; we extradite, 12 to15, 20 persons per year; that continued even when we had the problem with the one high-profile extradition," Chargé d'Affaires Parnell said.

"Now that this high-profile extradition is over, we will continue to work together with the law enforcement community and as extraditions arise on either side, from either country, we will process them,"

THE capture in June of accused drug lord Christopher 'Dudus' Coke appears to have been facilitated by the police intercepting the telephone conversations of the Rev Al Miller, the pastor with whom Coke was travelling when he was held. The Jamaica Laour Party (JLP) has rejected several claims by the Opposition about the State of Emergency.

The Opposition spokesman on national security, Peter Bunting has claimed that the State of Emergency did not cause the reduction in crimes, but instead cordon, curfews and searches. However, the JLP says this is not true.
It has also rejected arguments by the Opposition that the Government did not want the State of Emergency to be extended.

The Opposition has said if the Government was serious about securing an extension of the measure, it would have had all 32 of its MPs in Parliament last Thursday to vote for measure to continue. The Opposition also said the Prime Minister would have come to Parliament with the statistics relating to the State of Emergency when he was seeking the extension.

AL MILLER BAIL EXTENDED

The case against Reverend Al Miller was again mentioned in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning.

It was adjourned until September 23 after prosecutors told the court that they’re still awaiting several statements. Reverend Miller also had his $200,000 bail extended.

The popular pastor of Fellowship Tabernacle Church is facing charges of harbouring a fugitive and perverting the course of justice.

The charges came after then fugitive Christopher “Dudus” Coke was captured in Reverend Miller’s vehicle along Mandela Highway on June 22.

Miller has claimed that he was taking Coke to the US Embassy in Kingston where he wanted to turn himself in.
