GOVT. SIGNS SUGAR DEAL WITH CHINESE

GOVERNMENT yesterday signed documents to seal the divestment of the final three sugar estates held by the Sugar Corporation of Jamaica (SCJ) — Monymusk, Bernard Lodge and Frome — to the Chinese company Complant.

"Notwithstanding, in more recent times, a real concerted effort to divest the industry did not succeed, we felt that it was something we needed to pursue," Prime Minister Bruce Golding said yesterday at the Jamaica House signing of the deal between a delegation from Complan and Government representatives.

Government's push two years ago to sell the SCJ estates to the Brazilian company, Infinity Bio-Energy fell flat in the face of the worldwide economic decline.Agriculture Minister Christopher Tufton made it clear that the signing was two-fold, one for the purchase and lease of assets owned by SCJ, and the other to conduct a feasibility study for the construction of a sugar refinery and ethanol facility.The prime minister contended that Chinese investors viewed investment projects in a different way from other foreign investors.

POLICE KILLING A MAN CAUGHT ON TAPE

THREE policemen who were caught on video killing an unarmed man are now behind bars.The cops were ordered arrested yesterday by Commissioner of Police, Owen Ellington following last night's broadcast by TVJ of footage showing a shooting incident in Buckfield, St Ann.The amateur video shows policemen beating and shooting to death Ian 'Ching Sing' Lloyd as he lay on the ground unarmed and subdued. Lloyd had been accused of earlier attacking and killing Loveta 'Cherry' Wilson, at her home in Buckfield.

An officer was overheard telling the writhing man to 'Go inna the jeep' while raining down blows from a baton. In trying to ward off the blows Lloyd grasped for stones and tossed them in the direction of the uniformed officer who was beating him.Another plainclothes cop then walked up to the spot where Lloyd lay and waited until he took up a stone and attempted to hurl before firing a single shot in his upper body.

ZEEKS LOSES MURDER CONVICTION APPEAL

ONE-TIME Matthews Lane don Donald ‘Zeeks’ Phipps, today lost his fight in the Court of Appeal to overturn his conviction for the double murder of Rodney Farquharson and Deighton Williams in 2005.

Phipps was sentenced to life imprisonment in May 2006 and must serve a minimum of 30 years behind bars before he can be granted parole. Farquharson and Williams were shot dead on Rose Lane in West Kingston. Their bodies were then set on fire.

A local evangelist is demanding a musical clash with Dancehall artist Vybz Kartel.

Evangelist Taylor, who didn't want the name of the church he attends published, says he wants Isaiah Laing, the promoter of the annual Sting show, to arrange a clash between himself and Kartel.

"I want Laing to organise that clash, because Mr Vybz Kartel has been leading the generation astray for too long and we have to stop him. He is deceiving them," said the evangelist.

He accused the deejay of several immoral actions: "He's high in the demonic world, says he reads The Da VinciCode book ...," the evangelist claims.

"We need to trample Vybz Kartel, we're fed up of him now. Other pastors and I sit down and we listen to his songs, he is the one, there is a great force behind him," he further stated.

Jimmy Riley -- ever the dapper -- strolled on first, did a nursery rhyme song that Sugar hardly ever sang and exited. Then the best of the tribute came on in the form of an angelic-white attired Bongo Herman doing Mr DC. And after that, the tribute just descended.

Word is that the tribute cost a cool $400,000.00. Still don't know whether to laugh or cry.
