A MAN PULED A GUN ON A POLICE OFFICER, HE WAS SHOT DEAD

The police have identified the man who allegedly pulled a gun on an officer and was fatally shot on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Dwayne Gardener of an August Town address.

It is alleged that Gardener pulled a 9mm pistol at the officer when he attempted to accost him. It was during this attempt that the police pulled his weapon shooting Gardener.

The police report that about 4 p.m. at the Studio One Boulevard in Cross Roads, the police were conducting an operation in the area. The police saw two men exiting a Honda Civic motor car and attempted to accost the men.

Upon reaching the men, it is alleged that one of the men pulled a firearm and pointed it at the party. The officer opened fire, fatally wounding Gardener. The other occupant of the car escaped.

A Witness 9mm pistol and fifteen 9mm cartridges were taken from him. The Bureau of Special Investigations are probing the incident.

2 MEN ACUSED OF TRYING 2 ROB A BUS DRIVER WITH A PAIR OF SCISSORS

Two men accused of attempting to rob a public transport operator with a pair of scissors will face trial early next month in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

The men, identified as Andrew Siccard and Joseph Howell both of Corporate Area addresses, were both charged with assault with intent to rob. They both pleaded not guilty.

Allegations are that the bus operator who plies the route from Olympic Way to downtown Kingston was surprised by the men who posed as passengers when they brandished scissors at him and demanded money.

It is alleged that the bus operator resisted when the men attacked him. It is reported that he was stabbed several times by the accused men who then escaped. The complainant went to the hospital where he was treated and released.

Both men where remanded and should report to court on July 12 for their trial.

PORTMORE GETS MORE POLICE

The Portmore police crime-fighting capabilities have being strengthened with the addition of 30 constables.



Deputy Superintendent Girvis Wilson of the St Catherine South Division made the revelation at the Portmore Municipal Council general council meeting recently. DSP Wilson said the constables, who recently graduated from training school, were deployed throughout Portmore.
He said with an increase in certain crimes in the division, the additional personnel would definitely aid in the crime-fighting effort. "We have increased (in crime) in some areas such as robberies and break-ins compared to last year this time. For example, there are 119 robberies comparing to 85 this time last year," DSP Wilson said.

He told the council the police have been doing their best to fight criminals, with more than 600 persons being arrested since the start of the year. He said so far 40 illegal guns along with 316 rounds of ammunition have been seized in operations in Portmore and other areas.
He said even though the police are doing their best in the fight against the criminals, a concerted effort is required from the good citizens. "We need your information to help in the fight against those who want to hold us captive through their criminal acts," Wilson said.

US$20,000 REWARD 4 DUDUS...C'MON U HAFFI DO BETTER THAN DAT

Many Jamaicans are not convinced that the US$20,000 (J$1.72 million) being offering as a reward to anyone who can help to capture Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, the reputed area leader of the Tivoli Gardens community, is enough to make a difference.



The police had announced the reward yesterday for Coke who is being sought in connection with a extradition request to face drug trafficking charges in the United States of America.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Les Green said the figure offered was what the police can currently afford. "To a lot of people that is a lot of money," he said.
He said the police hope the reward will be enough to convince those with information to come forward and explained this was the most offered for the capture of a wanted person in recent times. He said: "We normally offer $1 million for wanted men and this time we did more. This is the highest in recent times."

The accused man had previously appeared before Resident Magistrate Marcia Dunbar-Green on June 8 in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court. He was remanded until the next court date. Allegations are that on May 11, Cobra, whose real name is Ewart Brown, drove into Braeton Phase One in St Catherine.
It is reported that he went into the community and was attacked. It is alleged that the incident took place when the lights from the vehicle in which he was travelling, shone on some men in the community. He was shot in the upper body and was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital.


Investigations by the police led to Johnson's arrest. He was charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and shooting with intent.

2 GUNS SEIZED, 205 ARRESTED IN DOWNTOWN CURFEW

POLICE today seized two illegal guns along with several rounds of ammunition and magazines during a curfew imposed in sections of the Kingston Central and Kingston Eastern Police Divisions.

Two hundred and five persons, including 12 females, have also been taken in custody. The police report that 35 persons have so far been processed, interviewed and released.

One 9mm semi-automatic pistol, a shotgun, 12 - 9mm rounds, seven 12 gauge cartridges, four 9mm magazines and an Ak-47 magazine have been seized.

Well-known Arnett Gardens area leader George Phang is fuming that he was detained by police and forced to spend a week in a lock-up for what he described as nothing. Phang, 54, gave himself in to police on Friday, May 28, a day after he heard his name on radio, asking that he surrender to the nearest police station.


Phang, who is manager of the Arnett Gardens Football Club, also distanced himself from rumours circulating that he has a friendship with fugitive Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, who is wanted by the United States to face drug- and gun-running charges.


"The only time that I ever deal with 'Dudus' was when I was making peace between Tivoli and Arnett years ago. I have had no contact with him on any other matter and at that time, the peace meetings included several other people, like Dawn Heron and Saleem Lazarus from Tivoli," said Phang.


"I have made a positive turnaround with my life. It is a massive turnaround from my years as a teenager to now. I am leading a life that the youth can see me as a role model and I want the police high command to help me, rather than draw me in the mud," Phang said.
